Locals earn decision in main event bouts

Aaron Downey, Colin Nicholson win at Young Guns III

Two boxers from Surrey were the winners of the twin main event at the Young Guns III card at the Coast Hotel and Convention Centre in Langley Friday night.

The amateur event, the 29th in the Clash and the Cascades series, saw Aaron Downey and Colin Nicholson win the heavyweight bouts in front of a crowd of 350.

Downey was in the ring against Dan Baxter of Tomari MMA in Nanaimo, and won the first two of the fight’s three rounds by a narrow margin. Baxter rallied in the final round, but didn’t do enough to prevent Downey from earning a decision. Downey trains at the World Kickboxing Academy.

Nicholson, from Suitela’s Martial Arts in Surrey, also earned a decision after a back and forth battle with Samuel Moses of Vancouver.
