A win would have been nicer, but the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers are satisfied with a second-place finish at the Fraser Valley 4A Girls High School Volleyball Championships.
The Panthers lost 26-24, 25-11, 25-18 to the Riverside Rapids in the championship match Friday evening at Earl Marriott Secondary.
“It’s what we’ve been working towards all year,” said coach Stacy Corneil on reaching the Fraser Valley championship match.
“Of course we would have liked a different result, but we’re progressing each year.”
Tweedsmuir, after going 7-0 (won-loss) to finish first in the Fraser Valley South league, was seeded second for the 12-team tournament, and advanced to the final by topping the seventh-seed Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils and the third-seed Earl Marriott Mariners.
Autumn Davidson and Claudia Corneil of Lord Tweedsmuir were named to the all-star team. Other players from Surrey schools selected as all-stars were Angelica Kilberg of the third-place Mariners and Darby Dunn of the fourth-place Elgin Park Orcas.
The Panthers, Mariners, Orcas and the sixth-place North Surrey Spartans all advance to the provincial championships Nov. 27-29 in Cranbrook. The Mt. Baker Wild are the host team.
The Panthers are ranked fifth the B.C. High School Girls rankings, one position ahead of Earl Marriott and two up on the Orcas.
Two Surrey schools also qualified for the Senior AA championships at Brentwood College School in Mill Bay on Vancouver Island.
The Pacific Academy Breakers won the Fraser Valley Championship tournament, defeating the Hatzic Crusaders 3-0 in the final.
Shaylene Reimer of the Breakers was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while teammates Jessica Bailey and Mikayla Funk were all-stars.
The Surrey Christian Falcons placed third, sweeping the Langley Fundamental Titans 3-0.
Michaella Crema of the Falcons was an all-star.
The host team for the Fraser Valley tournament, the Breakers are the top-ranked team in the provincial AA polls. Surrey Christian is ranked third, behind Vancouver’s York House.
