Pegasus lone Surrey team standing in Imperial Cup play

Surrey has just one team remaining after the Vancouver Metro Soccer League trimmed another four teams from the field of contenders in the annual Imperial Cup tournament Friday night.

Newton’s ICST Pegasus will carry Surrey’s hopes into the semifinal round next month after posting an emphatic 4-0 win over Westside in quarter-final round play.

Playing in the comfort of their own park, the Horsemen seized control of the match with two goals in the first half and never looked back to eliminate Westside from cup contention.

Pegasus opened the scoring in the 15th minute of play when Goldy Takhar was fouled in the penalty area. Chetan Jhooty easily converted the ensuing spot shot to give the Horsemen a lead they would never relinquish.

Ten minutes later, Takhar was rewarded for his efforts when he collected a pass from Reynold Stewart and hammered the ball into the Westside net.

Pegasus cranked up the offence in the second half when Javid Khan tapped in a nifty cross from Brendan Campbell and the rout was on.

Adam Costley sealed the deal in the 70th minute when his crossing pass was deflected into the net by a Westside defender.

Pegasus is the lone Surrey team standing because league-leading Surrey United Firefighters were upended 2-1 by lowly Inter in another quarter-final match Friday.

Surrey fell behind in the 20th minute, but were able to pull even 10 minutes later when Vinnie Stewart converted a well-placed corner kick by Tom Lowndes.

The score remained that way until the 75th minute when Inter finished off a clever two-man passing play to score what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
