Quarterfinals set at RCMP Classic

Eight teams are continuing their chase for the Surrey RCMP Basketball Classic championship, and will play today for a berth in Friday night's semifinal games.

Eight games in the first round of the all-Surrey senior boys high school tournament were played at four locations yesterday (Tuesday).

The three-time defending champion Tamanawis Wildcats advanced  with an 82-50 victory over the Kwantlen Park Timberwolves at Kwantlen Park Secondary.

Tamanawis, an honourable mention in the latest provincial top 10 rankings, will play the North Surrey Spartans this evening at 4:45 p.m. at Enver Creek Secondary in one of four quarterfinal games. The Spartans won their first round match at Kwantlen Park, topping the Earl Marriott Mariners 63-58.

A second quarterfinal contest at Enver Creek today will feature two South Surrey schools tipping off at 3 p.m. The Semiahmoo Totams, ranked 10th provincially, will play the Southridge Storm. Semiahmoo won their first-round game 88-61 over the Clayton Heights Nightriders at Panorama Ridge Secondary, while the Storm got past the Enver Creek Cougars 81-68 at Fleetwood Park Secondary.

The Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers, ranked ninth provincially, were at Guildford Park Secondary on Tuesday, where they pushed aside the Johnston Heights Eagles 85-42. The Panthers will play this afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary against the Guildford Sabres, 64-61 winners on their home court over the Sullivan Heights Stars.

The fourth quarterfinal today is at Fleetwood Park, where the Fraser Heights Firehawks and Panorama Ridge Thunder will battle for a semifinal berth.

The Thunder, an honorable mention in the provincial poll, defeated the Princess Margaret Lions 66-58 at Panorama Ridge. Fraser Heights won their first round game at Fleetwood Park, defeating the host Dragons 74-48.

Semifinal games will be played Friday at 5:45 and 7:45 p.m. at Enver Creek. Winners will play in the championship game, also at Enver Creek, Saturday at 7:45 p.m.
