The Semiahmoo Totems got the Surrey Fire Fighters Goodwill Classic off to a strong start Monday evening at Salish Secondary, beat Clayton Heights Secondary in the opening game of the city-wide tournament.

The Totems – who are the defending tournament champions and also currently the province’s top-ranked senior girls triple-A hoops squad – won the game handily, and were led by Faith Dut, who finished the game with 22 points.

Izzy Forsyth and Tara Wallack each had 18 points in the victory, while Deja Lee had 15 and Nicole Pajic 13. Raushan Bindra had 12 points and was named the player of the game.

With the win, the Totems moved into the second round of the tournament’s Axe Division, and are set to hit the court Wednesday afternoon against Holy Cross. The game tips off at 1 p.m. at the Cloverdale Rec Centre (6188 176 St.).

The senior girls tournament continues throughout the week, and wraps up Saturday with the Axe Division championship game, set for 4:15 p.m. at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary. The Ladder Division consolation-bracket championship is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. Saturday.
