Young softball players on the Semiahmoo Peninsula will have an opportunity to learn from some of the world’s best players next month.
As part of the 2016 Women’s World Softball Championships – to be held in South Surrey from July 15-24 – a handful of youth clinics will be at local parks.
Prior to the start of the tournament, on Tuesday, July 12, an international-team clinic will held at Sunnyside Park (15455 26 Ave.), from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Players from Australia, Italy, Puerto Rico and Ireland national teams will facilitate the sessions, which are open to boys and girls aged eight to 16.
A second clinic, set for 1-4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13 at Sunnyside Park, will feature Team Canada players.
Participants at each event will also receive a free T-shirt and one complimentary youth admission for the world championships, which is good for the morning games on Monday, July 18.
A pitching-specific clinic is also on tap for Saturday, July 23 at Crescent Park (2610 128 St.) and will be led by Michele Smith, a two-time Olympic medallist with Team USA.
The first pitching session will be held from 9-11 a.m., with a second planned for 1:30-3:30 p.m. Players in this session must bring their own catcher.
“For aspiring softball players, this is an unforgettable, fun experience that is not to be missed,” organizers said in a news release issued last week.
