Some of the best young athletes from across the province will be boarding a ferry to Vancouver Island this week, as the BC Summer Games get set to launch.
Of the 2,500 athletes expected to compete at the Games Friday through Sunday in Nanaimo, almost one in 10 will come from Surrey/Delta.
Surrey is sending roughly 140 athletes to Nanaimo to compete in the 19 sports. Also making the tip are 20 coaches and almost as many officials and supervisors.
There are 25 athletes entered in track and field, with another 15 on the Fraser Valley (Zone 3) team competing in baseball. In addition, there are also 15 soccer players, 17 softball players and 14 swimmers from Surrey set to compete in Nanaimo.
Delta’s tally includes approximately 81 athletes, with four officials and nine coaches also making the trip to Vancouver Island.
The largest group is in field lacrosse, where 11 Delta athletes are on the Zone 4 (Fraser Delta) team.
The Fraser Valley zone has fared well in recent B.C. Games. At the Surrey-hosted BC Summer Games in 2012, Valley athletes finished second overall with 163 medals, including 60 gold. Last February at the 2014 BC Winter Games in Mission, the Valley team was first overall with 110 medals, 31 of which were gold.
