Surrey squads advance at Fraser Valley tournament

Four teams from Surrey were among the eight first round winners at the Fraser Valley Senior AAA girls high school soccer tournament.

The Fleetwood Park Dragons, seeded second for the 16-team tournament, defeated the Heritage Woods Kodiaks 1-0 in one of eight games played Tuesday.

Other first round winners from Surrey include the fourth-seed Clayton Heights Nightriders (3-0 over the Tamanawis Wildcats), fifth-seed Panorama Ridge Thunder (3-1 over the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers) and the eighth-seed North Surrey Spartans (2-1 over the Terry Fox Ravens).

Eight teams from Surrey are in the tournament, which will determine participants to the provincial championship tournament May 29-31 in Vancouver.

Two local teams lost in Coquitlam in Tuesday's first round.  The Fraser Heights Firehawks fell 6-0 to the Charles Best Blue Devils while the Enver Creek Cougars lost 4-1 to Centennial.

Four Surrey schools face elimination in second round games this afternoon. Lord Tweedsmuir will host Tamanawis at Cloverdale Athletic Park, Sullivan Heights and Fraser Heights play at Goldstone Park, while the Cougars host Heritage Woods at Enver Creek Secondary.

All games are at 3:30 p.m.

In the championship round, the Dragons will host the seventh-seed Centennial Centaurs at Fleetwood Park Secondary at 3:15 p.m., Panorama Ridge and Clayton Heights meet at Newtaon Athletic Park at 3 p.m. while the North Surrey Spartans are in Tsawwassen to play the top-seed South Delta Sun Devils.
