Young golfers posted some impressive scores – out of the select field of 48 players who had qualified – in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Mini Tour Order of Merit Invitational at Quilchena Golf Club in Richmond on Saturday (May 27).

The Low Overall scores from the girls and boys divisions were carded by two MJT veterans – Satnam Gill, 12, of Surrey, who finished the day at one-under par 72, and Brayden Ko, 12, of Richmond, who fired a three-under on the back nine to pull away from his nearest competitors with a fine score of 70.

Her score earned Gill the MJT Girls 11-12 division title.

“I feel proud of the win and this week I practiced a lot for this tournament,” she said in a release.

“I am currently working on my swing and this helps me hit the ball straighter than I usually do.”

Surrey’s Kathleen Dunn, 12, finished second in the division, with a score of 75.

In the Girls 9-10 division, Surrey golfer April Zhang, 9, golfed 80 to come in third, while White Rock’s Stella Sun, 8, golfed an 84 (only 16 holes completed due to darkness) to place third in the Girls 8U division.

Surrey’s Zhongjun Daniel Qi, also 8, place third in the Boys U8 with a score of 78.

In the MJT Boys 9-10 division, Surrey golfers placed first and third, Minxing Matt Li, 10 , golfing a 68 for the division title and James (Chenrui) Qiu, 10, golfing a 73 for third spot.

“I think this win was the best win I’ve had this year,” said Li.

“The best shot that I hit today was my hybrid on the eighteenth hole, it almost went in.”

In the Boys 11-12 division, Surrey’s Jackson Wang, 11, golfed a 73 for second, while White Rock’s David Zhang, 12, tied for third in the division with a score of 75.

The next stop in the province, in which a few spots are still open for entry, is the MJT Mini Tour at Cheam Mountain Golf Club in Chilliwack on June 11.
