The Surrey Gymnastics Society (SGS) is home to three provincial champions.
Treyson Cerrato, Alon Zvikler and Maria Bashko won all around gold medals at the B.C. Gymnastics Championships last weekend in Kamloops, accounting for three of the seven all around medals won by SGS competitors.
Cerrato, 12, won his second consecutive provincial championship with a consistent performance in the Elite 4 category. He had a first-place score on pommel horse, won silver medals on floor and high bar, won bronze on vault and parallel bars and was fourth on rings.
"Treyson had a bit of a rough start this season, with a couple of minor injuries. It was a push to get him ready for this part of the season," said SGS coach and competitive program director John Carroll. "I knew he had it in him but this is the first time he has competed two days in a row with combined results. He did a good job of staying on task and being concerned only with what he had control over."
Last year, Cerrato was first all around in the Provincial 4 group, a category that was topped this year by SGS member Zvikler, who is coached by Carroll and Sean Eldridge. Zvikler, 13, was second on parallel bars and fourth on rings. In the same category, Martin Malcolm, 10, was fourth on both pommel horse and rings.
"Although Alon has done a pretty good job at the first few competitions of the season, both coaches (Sean Eldridge and John Carroll) were happily surprised by the outcome of the competition," said Carroll.
The third all around champion came in the girls Provincial 2 Argo group, where Bashko won a gold medal on floor and a silver on beam to finish first all around. Bashko, 10, was seventh on vault and bars.
"Maria has looked very good through the start of the season. I knew she had a chance if she could put four good events together in one day," said Carroll. " She did it and the result speaks for itself."
SGS boys placed second and third all around in the Provincial 2 group. Emanuel Gutierrez-Sandoval, 10, won the all around silver medal after placing first on floor and parallel bars, second on vault, third on high bar and fifth on pommel horse.
Teammate Timofey Azhogin, 11, won the all around bronze medal with a silver on parallel bars, bronze on pommel horse and rings, and fifth on f loor.
Two other SGS boys also won medals in Kamloops. Spencer Principe, 14, won gold on pommel horse and was fourth all around in the Provincial 4 (13-and-over) group while Kevin Naismith, 16, won a gold medal on parallel bars in the National Open category.
A pair of female gymnasts from the Surrey club won all around medals. Sarah Tobin, 11, missed first place overall by one-tenth of a point and took the silver medal in the Provincial 2 Tyro division. Tobin won gold on beam and floor, while 11 year-old teammate Eva Woodward was fifth all around with silver on bars.
Alanna Jones won gold on vault and an all around bronze in Provincial 5 Open. Jones, 20, was also fourth on bars and fifth on balanced beam.
In Provincial 4 Open, Jusleen Sangham 15, was fourth on beam.
