September means back to school for many, but it also signals the start of another season: football season.
The White Rock South Surrey Titans Minor Football Association’s many teams were busy playing other teams in the Vancouver Mainland Football League over the Labour Day long weekend, racking up plenty of wins throughout the Lower Mainland.
On Sunday, Sept. 3, the WRSS Titans Junior Flag (aged five, six and seven) Blue team beat the Langley White team 26-12, while the Titans Junior Flag White team tied the Langley Minor Red team 12-12, both at McLeod stadium in Langley.
The Titans Atom Flag team (ages eight and nine) lost to Cloverdale, 26-0, but the Titans Atom Tackle team won 43-19.
The WRSS Titans PeeWee team (ages 10 and 11) won at Dennison Park vs. South Delta, 20-0, while the Titans Bantam team (ages 14 and 15) won against the North Langley Hawks at McLeod stadium in Langley, 24-17.
In addition, the Titans Midget team (ages 16, 17 and 18) won 27-0 over the North Surrey Bears, and on Monday, the Titan Junior Bantam team (ages 12 and 13) lost 30-6 to the Royal City Hyacks.
“It was excellent! A very successful weekend… we’re off to a great start!” said WRSS Titans Minor Football Association vice-president Tina Giustino.
She noted that members of the BC Lions Canadian Football League team were scheduled to visit the junior flag to junior Bantam teams at their Tuesday night (Sept. 5) practice for their Punt, Pass and Kick competition, along with members of the BC Lions cheer team.
There’s also Titans Day coming up this Sunday, Sept. 10, where all teams (except Midget, who will play Sept 8 in the Friday Night under the lights game) will play on home turf, at South Surrey Athletic Park, 14600 20 Ave.
“We have a barbecue every home game, but this Sunday is special because it’s Titans Day. The barbecue will be going all day,” she said, noting that funds raised from barbecue and merchandise also acts as a fundraiser for the organization.
With the barbecue located by the blue track oval behind the baseball diamonds, the first football game starts at 9 a.m. and the last, at 6 p.m.
