University basketball is coming to the Semiahmoo Peninsula – for one night, at least.
On Tuesday, Oct. 18, the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades and Douglas College Royals men’s basketball teams will tip off at Semiahmoo Secondary for a preseason tilt, giving local hoops fans the chance to see some of the B.C.’s top young talent.
In addition, the game will be a homecoming of sorts for Cascades’ Manny Dulay and Sukhman Sandhu, both graduates of Surrey’s Tamanawis Secondary., and Daniel Adediran, a Pacific Academy alum.
It’s the second time that Semiahmoo has hosted a men’s university basketball game – in 2014, the Trinity Western Spartans and UFV squared off.
“We want to make it an .annual tradition and bring some college basketball to South Surrey,” said Semiahmoo Totems head coach Ed Lefurgy. “A lot of our boys have dreams of playing at that level, so to get the chance to see them in their own gym is pretty great.”
As well, the coach – now in his fourth year at Semiahmoo – hoped it would serve to energize his team in advance of the high-school season, which begins next month.
The Totems are ranked inside the provincial top-10 in preseason rankings, Lefurgy said, adding that “it might be the best senior team I’ve ever had.”
The Oct. 18 game is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students.
