Thanksgiving weekend was a productive one for the Valley West Hawks in BC Major Midget League action.

The Hawks swept a two-game set with the Greater Vancouver Canadians, improving to 6-2-0 and pulling to within one point behind the Northwest Giants in the standings.

On Friday at Langley Events Centre, the Hawks got two goals – from Matt Bradley and Mitch Newsome – and that was all they needed, as goaltender Kyle Cheema shut the door the rest of the way, stopping 27 shots en route to a 2-1 win.

In the second game, held Saturday, the Hawks trailed for much of the contest before pulled away in the third period for a 7-3 win.

In the early stages of the game, Valley West – despite controlling play – gave up three scoring opportunities, and the Canadians cashed in all three times.

In the second period, White Rock’s Matt Barberis got the Hawks on the board, and Cloverdale’s Jordan Funk scored 16 minutes later to make it 3-2.

In the third, Valley West exploded with five goals – two from  White Rock defenceman Devante Stephens, and single goals from Eric Callegari, White Rock’s Paul Smith and Funk.

Davis Koch, a Semiahmoo Peninsula resident, added two assists, and South Surrey’s Ty Westgard was named player of the game.
