Harness racing at Fraser Downs resumes this Friday evening at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino is getting set to host a big event on the harness racing calendar next month – the Western Regional Driving Championship.

And Fraser Downs general manager Ken Stratton says the April 26 event is an example of the type of opportunity the Cloverdale racetrack and casino is looking for, now that a five-year racing agreement is in place.

"Now that we have finalized our racing schedule and have a defined five year racing plan, the team at Fraser Downs can focus on securing and promoting events such as the Regional Driving Championship in hopes of increasing the profile of our racing season and entertainment offerings," Stratton said.

The new racing agreement sets out 35 confirmed race days at Fraser Downs from January to April of 2014, plus another 36 race days next fall.

The 2014 Western Regional Driving Championship is one of four regional championships taking place across Canada in advance of the National Driving Championship in August.

Competitors are chosen based on driving averages, wins and earnings on their home track – as well as their ability to act as representative of the Canadian harness racing industry.

The top two drivers from the Western Regional division will advance to the National Driving Championship at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Aug. 26.

Fraser Downs hosted the National Driving Championship in 2009.
