Ninety hours, 7,000 pieces of Lego, plenty of skill, patience and creativity was all that was needed for a group of Abbotsford lego enthusiasts to build a replica of the new Surrey Memorial Critical Care Tower.
SMH Foundation president and CEO Jane Adams initially came up with the idea to build a lego replica of the new hospital building – with its own ambulance, helicopter and medical staff – after she learned how the Child Life Specialists at SMH use the blocks to help young patients and siblings in the Children's Health Centre and the Pediatric Emergency Department cope with their time in the hospital.
The finished Lego structure will be offered as an auction item at the upcoming charity golf tournament July 22 at Morgan Creek Golf Club (which is sold out).
Langley resident Lee Wagner enlisted members of the Abbotsford Lego User Group to volunteer their time and take on the challenge, which included replicating the one-of a-kind windows and sourcing enough blue bricks to construct the main building.
"We received incredible support from the construction industry when we were raising money to purchase equipment for the tower, so I think this unique souvenir will be a hot item at
the auction," said Adams.
