The City of Surrey has been named one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People.
Since 2002, Canada’s Top Employers for Young People competition has been identifying the best employers when it comes to attracting and retaining young workers. The City of Surrey has been recognized for its efforts in developing young people within the organization and helping them build and advance their careers.
“We take great pride and are firmly committed in ensuring young people are provided with meaningful opportunities to make a positive transition to the work world,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “With one-third of the population of Surrey under the age of 19, it’s a smart strategy for the future of our city to help new talent learn, grow and progress as they embark on their careers.”
According to the competition, here are some of the reasons why Surrey was selected as one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People for 2015:
• Created a Future Leaders Program to help young people between the ages of 14 and 21 develop the relevant skills and knowledge to become successful recreation leaders – participants must complete an Instructor internship program to receive a reference letter and certificate.
• The city's engineering department works with the University of British Columbia to provide paid internship opportunities.
• Created a Building Inspector Mentorship Program to provide support to employees who have the necessary educational qualifications but lack experience.
• Partners with the Surrey School District to support students currently working to complete their high school education – employees work with students from the local learning centres within the district to help them develop their skills.
