Electric car enthusiasts got a fresh jolt Thursday as Tesla Motors opened its first B.C. supercharger station in Squamish.
It's the northernmost link so far in Tesla's corridor of 102 fast-charging stations that run to California and across the U.S.
They can give a Tesla Model S electric car enough juice in 30 minutes to cover another 280 kilometres – about two-thirds of its maximum range of 425 kilometres.
More conventional electric vehicle chargers take much longer to recharge.
Tesla says it has placed its chargers in convenient – strategic – places, so S drivers can shop or eat while they wait for their car to charge up for free.
The Squamish charger is in the Garibaldi Village shopping centre and offers drivers a convenient re-charge point on the Sea-To-Sky Highway between Vancouver and Whistler. It has six charging stalls.
Tesla intends to open more supercharger locations in B.C. by the end of next year. The next nearest Tesla supercharger is in Seattle.
