With three cranes towering above and excavators loading trucks all around, the concrete pour on Friday, March 2 was different than any other that has taken place during the redevelopment of Guildford Town Centre. On that day, a time capsule was placed in the foundation for the new expansion area of Guildford Town Centre.

“Guildford Town Centre has been a part of the Surrey community for over 45 years,” says Peggy White, general manager at Guildford Town Centre. “With the rich history we have shared with our community, we are extremely excited to be a part of the bright future Surrey has to offer. When this time capsule is opened, the bright future of today, will be the rich history of the future."

With that in mind, the time capsule was filled with items such as an “I love Surrey” pin, a letter from Mayor Dianne Watts to the future mayor and council, a book on the history of Surrey, plans of the redevelopment and even a TV guide, to name a few.

With 19 months left until the grand opening of the expansion area, the work at Guildford Town Centre is progressing at a quick pace. The balance of the parkade and 10,000 square feet of additional space for the new Walmart Supercentre will be completed summer 2012. Following that, the refurbishment of most of the existing centre will be complete for Christmas 2012 and the  new, two-level expansion area will open with 75 new stores and a  new food court in the fall of 2013.

Shoppers are invited to visit the presentation centre next to Old Navy to see the future of Guildford Town Centre through plans, renderings, videos and a computer generated “fly through.”
