Surrey’s latest Civic Treasures were feted Tuesday evening (Oct. 6) during a Business and the Arts event at Surrey Arts Centre.
This year’s awardees are artists Cora and Don Li-Leger, journalist Alex Browne and historian/entertainer Roger Bose. They join 31 others who won the annual award since it was established in 2008.
The award honours individuals “who have achieved excellence in the production of the arts and/or made significant contributions to the development of arts and heritage in the City of Surrey and beyond.”
Bose, a lifelong Surrey resident, is a historian, singer and community volunteer. He writes and researches the history of families, farms and businesses in Surrey and shares this information through the Tea & Tour program of Surrey Heritage (Museum) Services, as well as on guided walking tours of Cloverdale. He has also been deeply involved in writing the booklet “Historic Cloverdale: Walking Tour.”
Brown, an entertainment reporter at the Peace Arch News, a Now sister newspaper, has been promoting and supporting artists and new arts initiatives in the City of Surrey for decades. He is a musician with his own band, Alexander Browne and the Aristocrats, and he also performs in local theatre, and has been playwright, director and actor for two productions. Browne is currently finishing a collection of three mystery novellas with a Vancouver setting.
Artists Cora and Don Li-Leger have been Surrey residents for 25 years. They support the cultural scene through Z·inc (formerly Day of Drawing Collective), Contemporary Art Matters, the Newton Storefronts Pop-up Art Space Project, Culture Days collaborations and many other initiatives.
