OUR VIEW: Hard to fathom escaped murderer from Surrey is still on lam

How is it possible, in this day and age of surveillance and all kinds of other fancy technology, that a convicted murderer who escaped from jail more than a month ago has yet to be caught?

Shawn Merrick, 43, of Surrey, escaped on March 31st from a minimum-security "facility" in Mission where he was "serving" a sentence for second-degree murder and robbery. It's not like this guy is living in a cave, or up in the mountains. He is accused of robbing two banks in Surrey while on the lam, and others in Langley.

Perhaps if one looks on the bright side, Merrick's continuing adventure away from jail, where he belongs, reveals that we at least are not yet living in an Orwellian Big Brother society. Or if we are, it's not a particularly competent one.
