SURREY - A 16-year-old girl and her passengers are lucky to be alive after the grey Honda Accord she was driving in a suspected street race got wedged underneath a semi-trailer late Tuesday night.
Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to rescue them. Police believe she was racing with a brown Toyota Camry westbound on 16th Avenue in South Surrey when she crashed into the truck at high speed at 176th Street.
Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann said the truck driver had been waiting for a red light and entered on a green but stopped part way into the intersection after he saw the two cars bearing down. The second car veered out of the way and kept going. Police are looking for it.
The crash happened at 11:40 p.m. The teenaged driver and her passengers - two girls and a boy, also teens - were taken to hospital and treated for injuries that weren't life threatening.
The crash is still under investigation and no charges had been laid by press time. Schumann said police are "looking at whether" the driver of the Honda was impaired by drugs or alcohol.
