Nearly two years ago, two of their young schoolmates were killed by a family member.Now, students at Tamanawis Secondary in Surrey want to bring attention to domestic violence to help bring awareness and prevent it.Rida Jamal and Ruthdol Ywaya started the Tamanawis Empowerment Club last year because they felt minorities in their community were seen as oppressed and vulnerable.They began by raising funds for Haitian earthquake victims, and have now progressed to widespread issues such as domestic violence.An event is planned for today (Friday, Feb. 25) that will feature a talent show called Empowerment. About 300 people are expected.Also highlighting the evening is special guest Kamal Dhillon, an abuse survivor and author of Black & Blue Sari.The event begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7, available by contacting the school at 604-597-5234.
