SFU's women's soccer team will be getting a boost from two highcalibre Surrey soccer players.
The SFU Clan has recruited Panorama Ridge Secondary senior Monpreet Heer (forward) and Johnston Heights Secondary senior Samantha Donald (midfielder), both members of the Vancouver Whitecaps Elite REX program. Both have signed letters of intent with the university, according to second year head coach Annie Hamel.
Donald and Heer are the latest of nine recruits to the Clan, including Sullivan Heights Secondary senior Tanis Cuthbert, a midfielder described by Hamel as "a solid and hard-working player" who will invigorate the team with her competitiveness and positive attitude.
"We were able to sign an impressive freshman class and I am thrilled with the talent and character we were able to attract," she said in a statement. "It speaks volumes about the direction our program is taking and the quality of our academics here at SFU."
Heer was a member of the B.C. provincial team from U13 to U16, and her high-scoring offence is expected to give a much-needed push to the team's scoring potential. Last season, the Clan scored just nine goals in 18 games.
At 15, Donald was picked for the Whitecaps Elite program.
She started in midfield for the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite that won
the 2013 Gothia World Youth Cup in the U19 division and the 2013 Canada Summer Games.
Both Donald and Heer chose SFU independently, despite offers from universities south of the border.
