Zappacosta to sing for Surrey charities, with Watts as emcee

SURREY — Juno Award-winning musician Alfie Zappacosta will sing at a benefit concert for Surrey Hospice Society and Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society.

The $60-a-ticket gala is set for Friday, May 1 at Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey, with appetizers and a cocktail included in the admission price. Tickets are available at Bellperformingartscentre.com and 604-507-6355.

Former Surrey mayor Dianne Watts will be the event emcee.

"Join us for an evening of fine music, conversation and celebration," reads the event poster.

"Alfie Zappacosta is undeniably one of Canada's premiere songwriters and performers." During his heyday in the mid-1980s, the Edmonton-based Zappacosta penned and sang "Overload" exclusively for the hit Dirty Dancing soundtrack. (CLICK ON VIDEO BELOW TO HEAR SONG)

Elsewhere, local charity Sources Community Resources Society is staging a "Roaring Twenties" fundraiser April 11 at Hazelmere golf clubhouse in South Surrey. Peninsula Productions will entertain at the event, tickets for which are now sold out, at $125 a pop. The gala's fundraising goal is $100,000.

Sources' annual gala attracts more than 200 patrons. Proceeds assist close to 30,000 individuals served by the organization each year in Surrey, White Rock, Delta, Langley, Prince George and other areas – people "in crisis (and) those in need of food or shelter or employment."
