The equestrian drill team that makes snazzy grand entrances at the Cloverdale Rodeo is holding a barn dance and dinner Saturday night.
Bit-A-Bling is raising money for uniforms, transportation, arena fees, and, of course, bling for the horses.
"Believe it or not, all that glitter we use is expensive," laughs Hanne Olsen, the team's uniform coordinator, who takes a mobile phone call from the Reporter while – where else? – riding her horse.
The drill team formed in 2007 and currently has about 20 members. Most live in Langley or Delta, but they're a big presence in Cloverdale, where they're a crowd favourite in the Rodeo parade, and open each rodeo event at the Stetson Bowl, galloping into the ring in formation, and carrying out quick-paced, choreographed moves on horseback that take months to perfect.
Bit-A-Bling also performs at other events in B.C., including the Ashcroft Rodeo and the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo.
The April 16 dinner and dance at Windsor Stables in Aldergrove will help cover transportation costs and hay supplies for the horses at upcoming performances.
The evening includes dancing, a silent auction, a performance by Susie Francis and the Canadian All Stars, and more.
The team starts practicing in November, finalizing a routine by April. They move into the Stetson Bowl for rehearsals a few weeks before the Rodeo.
Tickets are $25. Doors open at 6 p.m., dinner is at 7 p.m., followed by performances.
