1. Guildford Recreation Centre will be an action-packed place on Saturday (May 6) during another Surrey Youth Showcase, a day-long event that includes a basketball tourney, dance battle, carnival games, airbrush tattoos, food, prizes and more. The events and activities happen from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 15105 105th Ave., Surrey, as part of the city’s largest free annual Youth Week event. Complete details are posted at Surrey.ca/sys.

2. Surrey Museum might feel a bit, well, sheepish on Saturday (May 6) during its annual Sheep to Shawl event, which runs from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cloverdale facility. Two local weaving teams will face off in a competition to card wool, spin it into yarn and weave it into beautiful shawls, all within four hours. Several sheep will be onsite (outdoors), and event-goers can try their hand on the museum’s spinning wheels. Also, sheep-shearing demonstrations will take place from 1 to 2 p.m., at 17710 56A Ave., Surrey. In case you didn’t know, such events have taken place in sheep-producing countries for hundreds of years. For info, call 604-592-6956 or visit Surrey.ca/museum.

3. One of Canada’s largest rehab facilities for birds of prey will open its doors this weekend (May 6-7) at Delta’s O.W.L. facility, or Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, a temporary home to eagles, hawks, owls and more. For 2017, the organization’s popular open house in Delta will feature demos, a raptor release at 1 p.m. daily, kid-friendly games, three food trucks (Triple O’s, Gypsy Trunk and Loving Hut Express) and a shuttle from the Boundary Bay Helicopter site, at the airport. The action happens daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3800 72nd St., Delta. Admission is by donation, and leave all pets at home for this one. For details, call 604-946-3171 or visit Owlcanada.org/open-house-2017.
