Record-setting year for Thanks 4 Giving

Delview Secondary's annual neighbourhood canvas for food in Delta was the best in 20 years.

For the past 20 years Delview’s staff and students have canvassed the North Delta community collecting non-perishable food items for the Surrey Food Bank and Deltassist Family and Community Services with their annual “Thanks 4 Giving” canned food drive.

On Oct. 11, Delview’s student and staff shattered the previous record of 16,155 canned food items, collecting 18,126 nonperishable food items and more than $1,000 in monetary donations.

Over 500 students – about 70 per cent of the Delview student body –  100 parent drivers and all of Delview’s staff, came together this year to collect food and cash for Deltassist and the Surrey Food Bank so that citizens of Delta and Surrey do not go hungry.

What originally began as “10-in-One”– the hope to collect 10,000 non-perishable food items in one night – has grown to an annual tradition of collecting far more. The Thanks 4 Giving campaign has been responsible for the collection of close to 250,000 non-perishable items over the past 20 years.

This year, the non-perishable food weighed in at 20,000 pounds, each pound valued at $2.50, for a total value of about $50,000.00.
