The federal Liberals made two separate housing announcements today.
One affects Canadians across the country. The other affects the residents of a co-op housing unit in Guilford.
Fleetwood-Port Kells MP Ken Hardie shared some details about a 10-year, $40 billion National Housing Strategy that the Liberals recently released.
The strategy was announced with the goal of reducing chronic homelessness and protecting Canadians from losing their homes.
With the announcement, the federal government wants to quadruple the number of housing units built under federal programs when compared to the ten-year period between 2005 and 2015.
They also want to repair three times the number of units when compared to the same time period.

“We can all look forward to seeing more families have access to an affordable place to live and to continued efforts to keep our affordable housing units in better condition,” said Hardie in a press release.
Most of the money from this $40 announcement won’t be spent until after the next federal election in 2019.
That includes $4 billion which was set aside for the ‘Canada Housing Benefit’ plan, which will be launched in 2020.
The Canada Housing Benefit is intended to give $2,500 per year to ‘each household recipient.’ At least 300,000 families will benefit from the announcement, according to the feds.
Hardie also sent out a press release that affects a local co-op development in Guilford.
The MP said today that 34 housing units at the Arboretum Housing Co-Operative will be repaired and upgraded.
$368,000 will be allotted for this project.
That money comes out of the 2016-18 Social Infrastructure Fund, which provided $574 million for such projects over a two-year period.
