It’s official: Ravi Kahlon will seek a third term as MLA for Delta North.

Kahlon announced his intention to run in this fall’s provincial election on Saturday (May 4), becoming the second candidate to do so after BC United hopeful Amrit Pal Singh Dhot last month.

Kahlon currently serves as minister of housing and government house leader. Since first being elected in 2017, he has spent time as B.C.’s minister of jobs, economic recovery and innovation; parliamentary secretary for forests, lands, natural resource operations and rural development; and parliamentary secretary for sport and multiculturalism.

A two-time Olympian with Canada’s national field hockey team (2000 and 2008) and an inductee to the Delta Sports Hall of Fame (2013), Kahlon and his family have lived in Delta for more than 20 years.

“People in Delta North have urgent needs in housing, health care, education, and affordable child care,” Kahlon said in a press release. “Our growing community’s future hinges on our ability to build strong, safe, and inclusive neighborhoods.

“The cost of Conservative or BCU leadership is too high a price for our progress. I am committed to tirelessly advocating for policies that ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive right here in Delta North.”

Premier David Eby said Kahlon is a tireless advocate who “is helping make sure people can build a good life here.”

“He has led the charge to make housing more accessible and affordable in Delta North and across B.C. People living here can count on him to be a champion for them and the issues they care about,” Eby said in a press release.

BC NDP has said it intends to run a full slate of 93 candidates in the next provincial election, which takes place on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024.

To date, the party has not announced a candidate in Delta South.

In late January, Delta South MLA Ian Paton announced he would once again seek re-election under the BC United banner.

“Representing the constituents in Delta South since 2017 has been an honour, but there is more work to be done,” he said in a press release.

Neither the BC Green Party or Conservative Party of B.C. have announced candidates in Delta North or Delta South.

Candidate nominations with Elections BC close at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28.
