Surrey councillor Pardeep Kooner wants city staff to report on current bylaws related to the standard of care for rental properties and how Surrey compares to neighboring cities.

She presented a notice of motion to council on March 11 that’s expected to be voted on at council’s next meeting on April 8.

Kooner says while she thinks a majority of Surrey landlords provide “adequate” housing she believes there are gaps in the city’s current standards for maintenance related to rental properties.

She wants staff to focus on heating, cooling and standards for health maintenance, as well as “ways to protect the tenants due to any changes to the bylaw.”
