White Rock’s school-zone speed limits may soon be in effect for an additional six hours from Monday to Friday, following council’s endorsement of “housekeeping” changes to the city’s street and traffic bylaw.
In a report to council presented April 29, director of engineering and municipal operations Jim Gordon said the proposed change — to 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. — is expected to “significantly improve safety by ensuring that the reduced speed limit is enforced during times when children are most likely to be present, not just during standard school hours.”

Currently, the 30km/h zone is in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; a time frame that does not factor in after-school activities or summer school sessions.
“This extension can help to reduce the risk of accidents during busy times such as dropoff and pick-up hours and provide a safer environment for all school-related activities,” the report states.
The bylaw change received three readings at the meeting; final consideration is scheduled for May 13.
