Inspired by the rustic coast of California, the Bohemian interior is meant to help customers feel a sense of escape.

A vibrant new taproom is making waves in Surrey with its retro vibes and flavourful brews, bringing guests back to the 1970s and ’80s, when roller skates and surfboards were the craze.

Officially opening their doors this month, Wayback Brewing Company now marks the third craft brewery operating within Surrey. Having spent the last few years curating the brewery’s design, identity and values, managing partner Chris Meyer and marketing director Manjot Dhillon are truly impressed by the support the brewery is receiving.

“Guests have told us how happy they are that we’re here and that the taproom is welcoming to both working professionals and families as well,” Meyer says.

“I think it’s an underserved community here in Surrey, particularly in Panorama Ridge. Although we’re in a location that’s kind of industrial, people are making the effort to check us out by bike, foot or Uber.”

With head brewer Kevin Emms at the helm of Wayback Brewing’s top-notch beverages, and the introduction of a pizza kitchen in the works for mid-January, there’s no doubt as to why new faces continue to walk through the doors of Wayback’s vibrant, vintage-inspired taproom.

Emms brings well over a decade of experience in the craft beer industry, with notable roles as brewmaster at Granville Island Brewing and Deep Cove Brewers and Distillers.

Introducing the flavourful five, the team at Wayback Brewing is keeping it simple as it enters its first year of service with five diverse, snappy flavours. These meticulously crafted brews include:

LAGER

An all-malt, classic lager – craft style. Flavours of light crackers with a hint of honey and lemon zest. Crisp, clean, dry, and refreshing.

Refreshing and bright with a snappy carbonation and light touch of herbal and stone fruit hop flavours. Finishes dry and thirst-quenching.

West Coast IPA

With a colour like a burning, summer sunset, striking hop aromas of orchard fruits radiate from this beer atop a foundation of fresh-baked bread crust.

CITRUS WHEAT

An approachable, modern take on a Belgian wit, this pours a hazy gold colour with a smooth flavour on the palate and delicate aromas of sweet orange peel and spices.

BAJA DARK

A take on the classic Bavarian dark lager brewed with a ‘south of the border’ flair. The refreshment of a crisp, clean lager meets delicate notes of dark chocolate and stone fruit.

A community hub

With a concise menu and much more in the works, the Wayback Team is on their way to establishing not only a business, but a community hub.

“We’re an open door for ideas and suggestions. Our hope is that people feel comfortable, included and that this is a place they can actively participate in. Who better to tell us what’s best for the community than the community itself?” Dhillon asks.

Wayback opens at 4 p.m. weekdays, 2 p.m. Saturdays and noon on Sundays, but will be closed from Dec. 24 to 27 and on New Years day.
