A head-on crash Sunday on McBride Boulevard Sunday shut the street for several hours.

Three people were taken to hospital following a head-on collision at the north end of the Pattullo Bridge Sunday evening.

New Westminster police said a van heading down McBride Boulevard onto the bridge crossed the centre line and hit a pickup truck.

The man and woman in the pickup received minor injuries and were released early Monday. The driver of the van also suffered minor injuries but he was kept in hospital for observation, said NWPD spokesman Sgt. Chad Johnston.

The department's collision analysts were called to the scene. Their investigation and the cleanup affected traffic for about eight hours, said Johnston. Traffic heading south could still access the bridge from Royal Avenue or Columbia Street but northbound traffic was forced to find an alternate route to cross the Fraser River.

Johnston said the cause of the van crossing the centre line is still under investigation.
