Accidental fire at Whalley mall started in barber shop

SURREY — Surrey fire investigators say the fire that badly damaged four businesses in a Whalley strip mall late Monday night was accidental.

Surrey Deputy Fire Chief Dan Barnscher said the fire started in a barbershop and the cause was "most likely electrical."

A woman's clothing store, a church ministry office and La Conquistadora restaurant were also damaged in the two-alarm fire, which erupted at about 10:30 p.m., causing the barbershop's roof to collapse.

Nobody was injured. Barnscher said 20 firefighters were called to fight the fire, at 10619 King George Boulevard, and had it extinguished within the hour.
