Arrest in double stabbing

VANCOUVER - A Surrey man has been arrested in connection with a double stabbing in Vancouver Saturday morning following a fight over who had rights to a taxi.

Vithna Andrew Va, 24, is charged with two counts of assault causing bodily harm, two counts of assault with a weapon and one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The stabbings happened shortly after 1:30 a.m., when two men flagged down a cab at Hamilton and Davie streets.

A fight broke out as the victims were getting into the cab, with two other men who also claimed rights to the cab. The two were taken to hospital with serious stab wounds. Both are in stable condition.

Police found the other two, believed to have been in the fight, a short distance away and arrested the Surrey suspect.

It was the first of two cab-related stabbings in Vancouver this past weekend involving Surrey men. Va is to appear in court in Vancouver on Feb. 19.
