They called Newton Recreation Centre home for 18 years, and then were told in 2004 they would have a new spot once the centre was remodeled.

Such was not to be the case for Newton Kyokushin Karate Club (NKKC).

The group of teachers and 44 students were ushered off to W.E. Kinvig Elementary School, which had cement floors and no heat for the evening classes.

After renovations at the recreation centre were complete in 2010, NKKC was told there was no room for them at the new facility.

The group appeared before the Surrey Parks and Recreation Committee that year to explain its plight.

NKKC's Helen Gillam told Surrey City Council Monday afternoon they were told "staff is only interested in promoting aerobic classes in the same time slots we had occupied for 23 years."

Helen and her husband Tom, who is the head instructor, feel the rooms they are being pushed out of aren't even being used to their maximum potential and are booked for drop-in courses for the most part.

Council heard the presentations by the Gillams, then referred the issue to city staff.
