A man in his 20s was killed after being struck by a freight train in North Surrey on Saturday night.

Surrey RCMP say just before 11 p.m., they received a call that a man had been struck while attempting to cross through a stopped train under the SkyTrain bridge by Old Yale Road.

As the individual, who was believed to be intoxicated, crossed between the freight cars, the train began moving and killed him.

Julie Senecal, spokesperson for CN Railway, told CTV News the crew, located at the front of the train, could not have seen someone trying to pass through.

"There was nothing the crew could do to prevent this from happening," she said. "It's an unfortunate accident that could have been avoided. It's an opportunity for a safety reminder that people should use extreme caution when crossing the tracks. This type of behaviour can lead to tragic consequences. It's very sad."

Senecal said that the investigation by CN rail police has been completed. The young man has not yet been identified.
