UPDATE: PHOTOS: Burned vehicle in South Surrey believed linked to Burnaby shootings

Vehicle located in the 18500-block of 18 Avenue

A burning vehicle found in South Surrey Thursday (May 13) night is believed connected to a multiple shooting in Burnaby that occurred shortly before its discovery, police say.

Integrated Homicide Investigation Team spokesman Sgt. Frank Jang confirmed the detail just before 1 p.m. Friday.

Police and fire crews were in the Hazelmere neighbourhood of South Surrey around 9 p.m. Thursday, following reports of a vehicle fire in the 18500-block of 18 Avenue.

The fire occurred less than 30 minutes after the Burnaby incident, in which 23-year-old Jaskeert Kalkat was killed and two others were injured.

The burned vehicle was parked in a hidden driveway on a dead-end road, according to a witness at the scene.

The witness reported a heavy RCMP presence at the fire scene – including the RCMP’s Air 1 helicopter and Police Dog Service – and that police were stationed at major intersections as far away as 56 Avenue, reportedly looking for individuals that fled the scene.
