Bruce Ralston, the NDP MLA for Surrey-Whalley, will not run for the leadership of the B.C. New Democratic Party.

Over the past several weeks, Ralston had said he was still giving the notion consideration, but would not confirm one way or the other whether he would seek the top spot.

"I'm thinking about it," he said last month. "Some people have approached me and asked me to consider it."

On Friday, he sent out a press release indicating he will not run for the leadership.

"My contribution to the job of rebuilding and reuniting our party is best made in other ways," he said. "I want to thank all those who offered their advice and support in making this decision. I look forward to contributing to the work ahead with a new leader."

Ralston was first elected in 2005 and reelected in 2009. He has served as the Opposition Finance Critic since July 2006.

He also served as the BC NDP's president from 1996 to 2001.

The leadership became available when former NDP Leader Carole James stepped down after a party coup on Dec. 7.

Since then, several people have indicated interest in the job.

Port Coquitlam NDP MLA Mike Farnworth became the fifth entrant into the race for leadership Thursday, joining Fraser-Nicola MLA Harry Lali, Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons, Juan d Fuca MLA John Horgan and marijuana activist Dana Larsen.

The NDP Leadership convention is scheduled for April 17.
