SUMS has a new leader

Longtime advocate for homeless, Jonquil Hallgate, has been replaced as head of Surrey Urban Mission Society.

There has been a change of guard at Surrey Urban Mission Society (SUMS), as a veteran face of social services in Surrey makes an encore.

Jonquil Hallgate, longtime executive director for SUMS, has been replaced by James Bennett.

For 18 years, Bennett was the executive director for South Fraser Community Services, which ran the Front Room homeless shelter and the Centre For Excellence in AIDS treatment.

Bennett said Thursday that Hallgate brought SUMS a long way during her term, but the board decided this week they were ready for a new chapter with the society.

Bennett will be at SUMS on a temporary basis until a full-time replacement can be found.

Hallgate could not be reached for comment.
