SURREY — A GoFundMe campaign has been launched with a goal of raising $10,000 for the 2017 Surrey Santa Parade.

Paul Orazietti, executive director of Cloverdale BIA, created the fundraising campaign on Monday (June 19).

“The Surrey Santa Claus parade organizers (Cloverdale BIA, Downtown Surrey BIA and the Fleetwood BIA) are looking for financial help (no donation too small) to cover growing operations costs that including increased policing, traffic control and equipment, insurance, promotion and security,” Orazietti writes.

“The event has been funded by a number of local Surrey businesses but costs seem to keep climbing as the event grows larger.”

The 12th annual Surrey Santa Parade, held in Cloverdale, will take place on Sunday, Dec. 3 starting at 5 p.m., while the eighth annual Big Rigs for Kids event, held in Downtown Surrey, starts that afternoon at 5:30 p.m.

“This event goes by two names, and the larger of the two is the start in Cloverdale which is named the Surrey Santa Parade,” Orazietti explains. “After the parade is completed in the Cloverdale Town Centre, the front half of the parade regroups on the Cloverdale Fairgrounds and heads north on Hwy #15. The 8th Annual Big Rigs for Kids lighted parade convoy heads west on Fraser Highway as it passes through the Fleetwood Town Centre where a new activity centre has just been created this year.

“The convoy then makes it way to Surrey Centre and they park on University Blvd just west of the Surrey City Hall. At the Downtown location, the vehicles become part of a static display and people are invited to see the entries up close. There is another activity centre with entertainment, charity BBQ and other fun stuff to go with the display.”

The event’s primary charities are Surrey Food Bank and Surrey Christmas Bureau. Parade-goers are asked to bring a non-perishable food item or unwrapped Christmas gift to any of the three “activity centres.”

”Meeting with the Fleetwood BIA on June 19 to go over their new activity centre near Fraser Hwy,” Orazietti wrote in an update on the GoFundMe page late this afternoon.
