SURREY — Surrey Mounties say they were investigating a report of break-in at the Dell Shopping Centre in Whalley Thursday night when a man started shooting at them.

It happened at 10604 King George Boulevard, at about 8:45 p.m. "The first officer on the scene was about to approach the suspect when the suspect discharged a firearm at the officer," Sgt. Dale Carr said.

The officer returned fire, but nobody was shot in the gunfight and the gunman eventually dropped his weapon.

The suspect is a 24-year-old Surrey man, whose name has not yet been released.

Meanwhile, police are also investigating a stabbing that happened late Thursday night in the 13700-block of 72nd Avenue in Newton. A 40-year-old man was taken to Surrey Memorial Hospital with what police said was a superficial stab wound to his chest after he'd apparently got into a fight with someone in a black Jeep Cherokee. Police are looking for suspects.
