Cold weather shelters in Surrey are ready to open if temperatures drop to freezing level.

The bite of winter will soon arrive, and cold weather shelters could open as soon as next week.

Along with the potential opening is a call for donations of quilts, blankets and cough drops.

Needed are about 60 blankets, 20 quilts, and no limit to cough drops. The cough drops are a huge relief to people using the sites, service providers say.

Donations can be dropped off at Hyland House, at 6595 King George Blvd., or call Jonquil at 604-581-5172.

The shelters will open when the temperatures drop to freezing.
