SURREY — Surrey's top cop just got a promotion but will continue to be the officer in charge of the Surrey RCMP.

Bill Fordy has been promoted from chief superintendent to assistant commissioner.

"Bill Fordy has made invaluable contributions to the people of Surrey and his promotion is well deserved," said Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner, noting he was awarded the Order of Merit in 2014.

Fordy has been in charge of the Surrey RCMP detachment, Canada's largest, since June of 2012.

His first posting as Mountie was in Surrey, in 1989.
