One woman is dead in a motor vehicle incident on the Port Mann Bridge earlier this afternoon.
The incident occurred eastbound on the west end of the span.
Police say a 50-year-old Coquitlam resident exited her vehicle, eastbound on Highway 1 at the west end of the bridge deck, and was subsequently struck by an east-bound tractor trailer.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The tractor trailer driver sustained no injuries.
"Investigators continue to speak with witnesses who observed what can only be described as an horrific event," said Sgt. Peter Thiessen, spokesperson for the Lower Mainland District Regional Police Service.
Police said the eastbound lanes of the bridge, closed earlier today, were to be re-opened by 4:30 p.m. this afternoon. Investigators acted as quickly as possible to minimize the impact to the motoring public, Thiessen said.
