The daughter of a man killed during an armed standoff outside a casino in New Westminster in 2012 has dropped a civil lawsuit she filed a year ago against the police officer who fired the fatal shot.
Nousha Bayrami sued Const. Jordan MacWilliams, accusing him of shooting her dad, Mehrdad Bayrami, "without warning or justification" after a five-hour confrontation at Starlight Casino. Police had been called to the scene early Nov. 8, 2012 after a report of shots being fired. Mehrdad Bayrami, 48, had allegedly accosted and confined his estranged girlfriend and after she was taken to safety, continued to wave his gun around and refused to surrender for several hours.
MacWilliams, a Delta Police officer working with the MIERT (Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team) at the time, said it was when Bayrami pointed the gun at police that he shot the man in the abdomen. Bayrami died 10 days later in hospital.
A document filed Dec. 17 in B.C. Supreme Court dismissed the suit filed by Nousha Bayrami.
In July, the Criminal Justice Branch also stayed criminal charges against MacWilliams – who was initially charged with second-degree murder in the case – due to a lack of evidence.
A coroner's inquest into Mehrdad Bayrami's death is slated to start Feb. 9, during which a jury will hear evidence and then make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances.
