NELSON, Howard Axel. Nov. 16, 1924 to July 7, 2013. The last Nelson of his generation has taken his final trip to sea. Predeceased by his parents Aksel and Hilda Nelson (Iversen) and his 8 siblings, his beloved wife Violet and sons Wayne and Howard Jr. Survived by children; Jacquie (Doug), Gerry (Kim), Rick (Marina), grandchildren: Rhonda, Dawn, Roxanne, Kristen, Tricia, Nicole, Leah, Jake and Amanda. Great grandsons: Mathieu, Brendan, Travis, Dyllan and Brody. His family settled the Sunbury area in the late 1800's, fishing the Fraser River and the West Coast as many of the descendants do to this day. They built the canneries, Sunbury Hall, Trinity Lutheran Church, logged the Fleetwood area and even ventured up to the Klondike Gold Rush. He is proud that the home his father built is a Delta Heritage House. Howard joined the Royal Canadian Navy as soon as he turned 18. He served 3 years on mine-sweepers on the BC Coast reaching the rank of Able Leading Seaman. He was always very proud of his service. He was a commercial fisherman all his life. Dad was a founding member of the United Fishman Allied Workers Union. He was responsible for starting the herring sale in December for the CKNW Orphan Fund. A Christmas tradition that still continues. Howard and Vi were married for 58 years and raised 5 children in the Annieville area. Howard missed Vi deeply since her passing 2 ½ years ago, and we hope they are together again and dancing up a storm for all eternity. "Jeg elsker deg" Daddy. A Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, 11040 River Road, Delta. Donations to the White Rock/South Surrey Hospice Society would be much appreciated.
