Big trees: Surrey can do better

They paved paradise to put in a sidewalk?

A letter writer was dismayed to find a large tree cut down in South Surrey.

Bearing witness: Recently in South Surrey, at the corner of 164 Street and 24 Avenue, another old tree was brought down.

The tree was not in the centre of the planned development, but closer to 24 Avenue. Its diameter at the widest point was 1.4 metres (4.7 feet). I know because I measured the stump.

Why did it need to come down? To make way for a sidewalk? Personally, I’d have been willing to walk around.

We can do better.
