Letter writer Isaac Munnalall (“Canadians are losing their identity,” June 11) has one point of view of what Canadian identity should be.
My point of view differs in that I never want the government to dictate who can be my friends, or where I can or cannot reside in Canada.
I respect and cherish the fundamental rights entrenched in the Canadian constitution, which includes the freedom of association and mobility/residency rights. The guaranteed freedom for each citizen to choose is one of the key things defines the Canadian identity. I would oppose any government that seeks to restrict or reduce these rights.
I believe that citizens with Chinese origin residing in Vancouver’s Chinatown, or citizens with South Asian origins that reside in Surrey, are just as patriotic as citizens living throughout Canada.
Was Mr. Munnalall was not in town during the 2010 Winter Olympics?
