Newton safety forum was more like election campaign

Surrey - The Editor, Re: "Surrey addresses local concerns at Newton safety forum," the Now online.

I was at the well-attended neighbourhood safety forum in Newton on Saturday. I had originally thought it was a great idea, but I did not realize it was going to be an election campaign for the mayor and councillors. There was so much self-back-patting, I was anticipating there would be a request for donations. There was a very long list about what was going to be done or was planned to do in the future, not what was in action now. Even after eight years in office, everything is always going to be started in two to four years. They did put in a light bulb at the arena and I heard something about cameras. But, when the topic came up about increasing RCMP right now, the subject seemed to be quickly avoided. So, if something was going to have a continuous, lengthy cost, the mayor did not wish to speak about it. A $100-million new city hall building was/is not a high priority in my books. I am finding it very scary out there now, after living here for 20 years.Janis McDonald,Surrey
